As of 2026, Instagram does not send a notification when you screenshot a public story, a Close Friends story, a post, or a reel. The one place where notifications still fire is disappearing photos and videos sent inside a Vanish-Mode DM.

The exception: disappearing DMs
If someone sends a one-time-view or replay-limited photo or video inside a direct message, screenshots do generate an alert to the sender. Regular text DMs do not.
