Vanish Mode is a direct-message setting inside Instagram that removes messages from a conversation once the other person has seen them and the chat is closed. It's designed for quick, ephemeral back-and-forth rather than persistent threads.
Below is what it actually changes, when creators and community managers might reach for it, and the exact steps to turn it off if it was toggled by accident.
How Vanish Mode works
When Vanish Mode is on, any messages sent inside that chat auto-delete after the recipient has viewed them and both people leave the thread. Screenshots trigger a notification to the other side.
How to turn it off
- Open the chat that's currently in Vanish Mode.
- Swipe up on the conversation, or tap the banner at the top that says Vanish Mode is on.
- Confirm to switch it off — messages sent afterward will behave normally.
